What you really need to know about eating when you are hungry

As a teacher of Intuitive Eating, I am a big proponent of encouraging you to eat most of the time in accordance with your hunger.

And sure, that will most likely help your body return to it’s natural weight

And of course, it is better for your health because you are following your body’s signals and needs.

But the real reason I encourage you to eat when you are hungry, is because it is the MOST PLEASURABLE way to eat.

Food tastes better. Eating is more enjoyable. The food you choose is more satisfying.

Eating when you are hungry brings the most JOY.

And why would joy be a factor in how and what you eat?

Because the whole reason you want ANYTHING in life, is in order to feel good.

Because joy is the reason you are here.

Because when you are in a vibration of savoring and delight, you attract more into your life for you to savor and delight in.

Because when you are filled up on pleasure, it is EASY to eat in accordance with your body’s needs. It is EASY to fuel  your wonderful body with nourishing foods. Its EASY for you to have a normal, healthy, peaceful, enjoyable relationship with food and yourself.

Because you have to eat everyday for the rest of your life, so why not make it a wonderful part of your existence?

Joy is the key. Seeking out and prioritizing PLEASURE produces endless benefits to your health, your body and your life as a whole.

So sure, you can eat when you are hungry for your health or your waistline.

But eating a food you LOVE, when your body is desiring it, all while taking the time and focus to revel in the deliciousness and appreciate your meal,

eating for the joy, eating for the pleasure

THAT is what is most fulfilling.

THAT is what is going to fill you up.

THAT is what really hungry for.

So it’s January, prime diet starting time, and I want to know:

Did you choose to try follow a few new rules, deny yourself your favorite treats, tell yourself that this time (this time i swear!) I will finally get control of my eating and sort this body out? Did you choose to give this controlling your body and your eating with outside ideals and restriction another go (even though deep down you know it ain’t going to work)?

Or have you chosen to set yourself free. To start eating for pleasure and joy and radiance. Have you chosen to make peace with yourself and peace with your plate? Have you chosen the path of discovering how to be a happy, healthy, peaceful eater (and woman) not just this month but every year to come? Have you decided that enough is enough and you are FINALLY READY to let go of what isn’t working and embrace the intuitive, vibrant woman you feel you can be?

Whatever your choice; you are a brilliant, wonderful human being. There are no wrong answers.

And I want you to know, the choice to be free, joyful and happy in your food relationship, body and life is always there, available to you.

You get to choose.

Beware Vision Board Backfire: Is your manifesting technique working against you?

It’s standard manifesting advice:

Grab a big bit of card or a Pinterest board and stick on pics of everything you want. Then focus on it and they will happen!

Now, I think vision boards are fantastic WHEN they are used in the right way. 

BUT when you use them in the wrong way, all the focusing and attention you are giving your collage of dream images can backfire.

It can block what you DO want to happen and it can lead to you bringing more of what you DON’T want into your life. 

To assess if your vision board is helping or hindering:

How do you eat? What is your relationship to food like?

Are you an all-or-nothing kind of a person; either being super good and eating a perfect clean/paleo/sugar free/plant based/whatever diet. But then when you break your food composure by having a treat, it turns into an all-out feast cause’ “screw it, I might as well eat ALL THE THINGS.”?

Or maybe you are the kind of person who eats when it’s lunch time. Who eats when they SHOULD. Who chooses the correct portion sizes based on what they had read somewhere.

Or maybe you eat mindlessly. Eating just because its’s there. On AUTOPILOT.

However you eat and relate to food, I would bet that’s how you approach other areas of your life too.

When you’re feeling blah and not motivated to do much of anything.

What question?

The question that is most important to you.

A question that will instantly connect you back to what you really want and who you really are.

A question that will wake you up and make you pay attention

A question that will snap you out of a negative tail spin and into alignment with your best you.

The Feminine Way: Stop Struggling to Reach Your Goals.

When we want to reach a food/body goal (whether that be weight loss, increased health, clear skin) we are encouraged to seek out a plan of action on how to achieve it. To find some external information on what, when and how much to eat. We are told to use our willpower, self-control and unwavering focus on our goal to make the plan stick.

We are lead to believe that is the best and only way.

And this is where it gets tough for us ladies.

Will I lose weight?

Does this thought run through your head?

“Becoming a happy, healthy, intuitive eater sounds great Hannah, but will I lose weight?

It wouldn’t surprise me if it does because I get asked that a lot.

The “will I lose weight” question makes me want to grab one of the wooden crates in my kitchen (yes, there are wooden crates in my kitchen. Filled with empty bottles. A remnant of hubby’s home brewing operations, not alcoholism) and jump on it soap box style to launch into a discussion about the validity and the personal, social and cultural impact of weight loss as a goal in the first place.

But I know you were not after a lecture. Will save that for another time.
